Coalition Asks Biden Administration to Reduce Truck Emissions by Fall 2022

A wide-ranging coalition of business, science and environmental groups is calling on the Biden administration to within the next 18 months set “multi-pollutant climate and clean air standards” that will eliminate particulate matter, oxides of nitrogen and greenhouse gas emissions from new freight trucks and buses.

“We urge your administration to adopt pollution standards by fall of 2022, eliminate the smog-forming nitrogen oxides, deadly particles and climate pollution from freight trucks and buses that are based upon, and fully mobilize, the availability of zero-emitting solutions,” said a letter to President Joe Biden, dated March 23.

The Natural Resources Defense Council, Environmental Defense Fund, Union of Concerned Scientists, Interfaith Power & Light, League of Conservation Voters, American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy and the California Business Alliance for a Clean Economy were among the 17 groups signing onto the letter.

Copies of the letter also were sent to a range of top Environmental Protection Agency officials, including recently confirmed EPA Administrator Michael Regan.

Truck pollution standards should eliminate pollution from all new freight trucks and buses no later than 2040, and from freight trucks and buses used in urban and community areas no later than 2035, the letter said.

A recent analysis by the Environmental Defense Fund showed that pollution standards that achieve the groups’ goals would prevent 57,000 premature deaths and eliminate more than 4.7 billion metric tons of climate pollution by 2050, according to the letter.

“Pollution from freight trucks and buses is concentrated in low-income communities and communities of color,” the letter said. It said “protective standards are essential in order to address that disproportionate impact.”

RNG: Drive Clean in 2021 With Additional Grants Opening In Spring

There is a buzz around electric trucks, and Wall Street has responded to it. But most currently available options are light- and medium-duty, which make them preferably suited for short routes or last-mile delivery.

Trucks Fueled by RNG Provide Immediate Emission Reductions

Before electric trucks get more scalable, there is a low-carbon option for heavy-duty applications that is already in wide-scale use. Investing in trucks fueled by renewable natural gas (RNG) is the most immediate and cost-effective climate positive change policymakers can affect.

RNG, or biogas, is produced from methane emitted through the decomposition of animal manure, food waste, forest management waste, wastewater sludge, and garbage. RNG projects capture this methane and redirect it away from the environment, repurposing it as a clean, green energy source of energy to fuel America.

Using RNG as a transportation fuel not only reduces the environmental impact of organic waste, it displaces traditional fossil motor fuels, and restores America’s local economies by supplying new revenue streams for family farms, employing laborers for facility construction and operation, and creating a whole new green energy workforce.

RNG can also be zero-emission equivalent when it comes to smog-forming tailpipe pollutants like nitrogen oxides (NOx). All new natural gas trucks, regardless of fuel source, virtually eliminate NOx emissions as a result of the fact that they achieve emission reductions that are greater than 90% better than federal or California standards, and they don’t produce any diesel particulates.

RNG/CNG Grants Available In Spring 2021

A grant opening up in spring 2021 shows the continued government support and the industry’s inevitable direction towards renewable fuels. New motor vehicles that operate primarily on compressed natural gas, liquefied natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas, hydrogen fuel cells, or electricity, including electricity to power fully electric motor vehicles and plug-in hybrid motor vehicles. Also provides minimum of $600,000/yr in grants to assist eligible applicants in the installation of refueling infrastructure for grant funded vehicles. https://www.txng.org/grants-interest-form

Data Confirms RNG is Carbon Negative

Data from the California Air Resources Board (CARB, Q3 LCFS Data) confirms that the energy weighted carbon intensity (CI) value of California’s bio-CNG consumed as a result of its Low Carbon Fuel Standard program is now below zero at -17.95 gCO2e/MJ.

Secretary Kerry is correct. We need to move fast; we need to move now. And since climate change is cumulative, the longer we wait, the harder it gets to solve.

Get clean air and reduced emissions today by replacing aging fleets with RNG-fueled trucks and buses.

New Cummins Powertrain for Heavy-Duty, Natural Gas Applications

Cummins Inc., NYSE: CMI a multinational corporation that designs, manufactures and distributes engines and power generation products, and Cummins Westport Inc. say the ISX12N engine +Endurant HD N powertrain is now available for heavy-duty customers.

This powerful powertrain combination supports heavy-duty trucking fleets reaching their lower emissions goals and taking initiative in sustainability. “The deep powertrain integration delivers improved launch, low-speed maneuverability and smoother shifts that drivers will appreciate,” says Thomas R. Hodek, president of Cummins Westport.

The ISX12N, natural gas engine is available with a rating of 400 horsepower and 1,450 lb-ft torque. The new powertrain can operate on CNG, LNG and RNG Renewable Natural Gas. When using RNG fuel, the system is deemed with a neutral to negative carbon index, resulting in net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions at or below zero.

The Endurant HD N automated transmission was optimized to integrate with the ISX12N natural gas engine and features new software functionality and calibrations – and a new diaphragm spring clutch designed to meet the load requirements of the natural gas engine while protecting the engine for optimal performance.

NGV Global Group has seen high customer satisfaction with heavy duty trucks equipped with Cummins power train technology.
